News from the courts is provided by vastly experienced law correspondent John Robertson who also gathers the gossip for our Court Shorts column.

Other regulars include Beneath The Tweets, a bridge between print and social media written by Neil Stevenson of the Law Society of Scotland.

Members of the Society are styled Writers to the Signet and use the post-nominal “WS”. Membership is available for those over 3 years’ qualified, affiliate membership for those under 3 years’ qualified (including trainees), and associate membership for lawyers qualified overseas.

The WS Society’s origins go back to the 15th century and the early use of the royal seal of the Scottish Kings, known as the Signet, used to authenticate documents. In 1532 the Writers to the Signet became members of the College of Justice, established by King James V, which formally established the separation of powers in Scotland with an independent judiciary and legal profession.

The ceremonial head of the WS Society is the Keeper of the Signet, the Right Hon. Lord Mackay of Clashfern, and its most senior office bearer, and Deputy Keeper of the Signet, is Caroline Docherty.

The WS Society’s home is the Signet Library building in Parliament Square in Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, one of the country’s architectural landmarks. The Signet Library is an outstanding events venue and can accommodate everything from seminars, meetings, conferences, large-scale dinners and receptions, weddings, and private dinners. Events at the Signet Library are managed for the WS Society by Heritage Portfolio, one of Scotland’s leading event and catering companies.
