The Scotsman remains dedicated to offering the best news coverage and analysis of the legal profession in Scotland. With a proud history of covering Scottish legal stories, it remains the country's leading newspaper for law and legal affairs.

As well as news from all sectors of Scottish law, the dedicated law and legal affairs section, published each Monday, hosts comment and opinion from some of Scottish law's leading lights discussing the important issues of the day. Whether it is the latest developments in family law, or the future of advocacy, our section provides a forum for debate among the profession.

News from the courts is provided by vastly experienced law correspondent John Robertson who also gathers the gossip for our regular Court Shorts column. Other regulars include a rundown of intellectual property law from Marks & Clerk, the view of younger lawyers articulated by Collette Paterson and a monthly look at commercial law from CCW Business Lawyers. Meanwhile, Legal Update provides a weekly round-up of news for the profession.

The Scotsman’s Law Alert is a free e-mail service allowing legal professionals to find out about the main issues appearing on the law pages in advance. To join the distribution list, or just to get in touch, e-mail law@scotsman.com.

Ros.gov.uk >

Ros.gov.uk

Ros.gov.uk is responsible for compiling and maintaining public registers of land and property transactions, and other legal records. Our work is dominated by the two main registers recording ownership of and rights over, land and property - the General Register of Sasines and the Land Register of Scotland. The Land Register is a state guaranteed; plans-based register established by the Land Registration (Scotland) Act 1979 Act to eventually replace the Sasine register.

Apart from the two main land registers we also hold 14 registers grouped under the collective name of the Chancery and Judicial Registers. We currently employ over 1,400 people, in offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

We have always been self-financing, being funded by the fees charged for registration and for providing information from the registers. In 1996 we were awarded Trading Fund status.

We have a clear goal to further reduce reliance on paper-based systems, drive down fees and provide a first class service to the people of Scotland. Our work protects peoples’ legal rights and we play a vital role in maintaining economic confidence by guaranteeing land and property ownership.
